Last Leg

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

What I am trying to do is quite complicated.  I can tell you that it is the most complex thing I have ever done.  The logistics are difficult.  How to piece together the whole world in some meaningful and workable manner.  When things fall apart, I have to pick up the pieces and I just did that with Patagonia.  Not only do I have to think about what I am doing tomorrow and the next day, but I have to start managing the next leg (in this case it will be August through December and shaping up as Brazil, Africa and Madagascar… roughly).  And I also have to send up trial balloons about other legs of the trip and see what sticks over time.  I have planned to see Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific as the final leg.

Treading on Thick Ice

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Last Saturday I flew from Ushuaia to El Calafate.  I was going to the real Patagonia and I planned to head north via bus on Ruta 40 after spending three days in El Calafate.  I planned to stop in El Chalten to trek Mount Fitz Roy and then see Cueva de Las Manos where there is a cave with painted hands and animals dating back over 9500 years before arriving at the Andes resort of Bariloche.  Technically, Ushuaia is part of Patagonia, but as far as I was concerned, El Calafate got me to the real place.  I just love the word PATAGONIA.  Images of craggy mountain peaks, glaciers, lakes, rivers and the big nothing to the Atlantic Ocean fill my head.

Buenos Aires – Wide Boulevards, Stores, Cats and Ice Cream

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

I don't know if I really liked Buenos Aires. It's not that I disliked it. I just wasn't grabbed by the place. Just another big city. It has no geophysical character like a mountain or pretty ... [Continue reading this entry]

Fin del Mundo

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007
End of the World... Tierra del Fuego, Argentina and Chile.  I am in Urushaia, Argentina one of the most southerly places on earth.  It is the end of the world because this is the furthest migration from Africa.  It feels ... [Continue reading this entry]

Tale of Two Concerts

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007
I went to two concerts this week in Buenos Aires both of which were acts from England rather than Latin America.  Also, both are has-beens, but I thought they would entertain me while I am in this large city.  I ... [Continue reading this entry]

Sacred Valley

I would say that the Sacred Valley around Cusco, Peru is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited.  Jillian and I enjoyed a day seeing half of the valley and I definitely wanted to see the other ... [Continue reading this entry]

Arequipa and Colca Canyon

Monday, March 19th, 2007
I went to Arequipa after I recuperated from an odd and fast-moving illness that started on the bus ride from Trujillo to Lima.  I met my friend Mark in Arequipa and we ended up hanging out together in Arequipa, Colca ... [Continue reading this entry]
