Take me down to Ho Chi Minh City

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

After a great time in Nha Trang, we have arrived at our final destination in VietnamĀ – Siagon. Our last day in Nha Trang was really awesome, we taught in the morning, and one of the students (who Lauren unofficially labeled as her favourite) gave Lauren as teddy bear to say thank you. It was all very touching.

That afternoon we went to the mudbaths. It’s an odd feeling, sitting in a hot tub full of mud nestled on the side of an enormous hill, but we really enjoyed it. It made both uor skin turn as soft as, and the freaking hot 38′ jacuzzi was almost enough to strip the skin.

We then went for our envening lesson, due to finish an hour and a half before we left for Saigon. The previous evening the students had brought in coloured paper, tinsel and bamboo to make lanterns for the mid-autmn full moon festival. This evening the students put on a presentation for us telling us about their lanterns and describing the story of the festival. It was all very sweet and they bought the both of us a present each, a decorative plate which they had written in silver pen ‘Crazy Kim’s School – Nha trang’ Indeed, Lauren had to fight hard not to shed a tear (much to the delight of the enamoured students.) It was wicked, they were lining up to hug us goodbye.

It’s possible that I may start being nicer from now on, it was a good feeling.

That was then, and this is now. Now, after a 12 hour bruise enducing bus ride to Ho Chi Minh. We arrived at around 7 ish, and found ourselves a place to stay. Lauren being somewhat more picky than me when it comes to accommodation, our general tactic is for me to stand in the street with all our stuff and for Lauren to go and try and find somewhere agreeable. The first place she went to was apparently like Texas Chainsaw Massacre but without the Texas. Thankfully, a helpful shop clerk pointed us in the direction of mini hotel alley, and we have holed up in a reasonable place for $10 a night. On the downside, as we were leaving this evening, the majority of the family that run the place were de-lousing each other in the lobby. Mhm…
