Koh Tao: Recommendations
First of all, assuming you are not on a honeymoon or anything, try and stay on Sairee. It is the epicentre of many things to do. The first thing you should get yourself involved with is a bar called Vibe Bar on Sairee beach. The guy who runs it, an Essex Ex-pat called Dave, basically sorted out Lauren and me on the entire stay, whether it was which beaches are nicest, where to go for a wicked night out, or the best way to do a visa run, Dave and his fiance and the rest of the people there are the people who will gladly help you out.
We stayed at Asia Divers, it really was nice compared to some of the places some of our mates stayed at, particularly compared to AC bar which was reminiscent of a crack den. Our mate’s room for three comprised of three matresses on the floor side by side, and that was it. For 100 baht less per night at Asia Divers (though we got it even cheaper cos we were there for 1 calander month) Lauren and I got sky TV, a real flushing toilet, a cool room with fan and a swimming pool. The diving at A.D. is pretty good too, they speak nearly every language between all of the instructors and the staff are friendly.
Eating out, try and stick to thai food if you are on a budget. I’m not really sure who the demographic of readers is for this, but today alone I’ve had 30 different computers look at this site so I’m guessing its more than just my mum.
Western food here, barring the surprisingly good pizzas, sucks bigtime. Tiny portions mixed with poor copies of food you get back home for up to quadrouple the price of a thai equivalent.
If you can, try and get down to Freedom beach. It is secluded and relaxed, you will be sharing it with a maximum of 5 people, so there’s always a spare hammock!
Watch out for some of the moped/ bike lendors as they will charge you the earth for any dents you make, particularly the ones in Sairee.
I love Koh Tao, Lauren loves Koh Tao, and we are both going to miss it loads.
