The Winning Days

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Quite a touch today really.

After kicking about in the dirt waiting for Lauren to finish her job trial (she got the job!!! A big round of applause please,) Lauren and I went for some celebratory sushi. It was all a bit in the air at one point, the manager wasn’t in when Lauren had her trial, so the team had to tell Lauren that she’d know for definate on Wednesday. The friggin’ Melbourne Cup makes things so much harder to achieve. ALL business except the entertainment industry is shut tomorrow, meaning that our accommodation and jobhunting has to, essentially, come to a halt mid-week. However, this evening, Lauren got a call saying that the manager on duty had phoned the real manager and she had the job! It’s some pretty sweet pay too.

This obviously made me muchos happy, but, did nothing for my male hunter-gatherer pride. I wanted a job too. I had heard on the vine that I could phone some guy for some definately not cash in hand labouring, which I did phone, and he told me to call his boss today. After a call every hour between 1 and 6, his boss hadn’t picked up once. Thankfully, the guy who told me about the job, someone in our hostel called Reece, managed to get hold of the boss and ask for the both of us what was going on. We start work at 7:30am on Wednesday. Wicked.

Pub quiz tonight in the hostel and Lauren and I (as well as another couple from Ireland,) became the object of much scorn as we cruised into first place by a significant 5 points. We managed to blag A$82 for the two of us in prizes. These were; A free night accommodation for the two of us (worth $64), 3 hours internet usage each, (worth $20,) and a beer each, (worth around 75c I guess,) Oh, wait, I’ve done my maths wrong…

So, things are looking pretty up at the moment. We go to Trevor and Midge’s again tomorrow to celebrate the Cup, can’t get too drunk though, we got jobs to go to in the morning.

Melbourne is the oddest city so far…

The getting all dressed up wasn’t enough.

The public holiday wasn’t enough.

The 48 hour drinking marathon (72 for some folk) wasn’t enough.

Now, on the Monday of the Melbourne cup, a large portion of central Melbourne City is closed to traffic as they hold the Melbourne Cup Parade.

Past winners are parading through the streets, as well as some lucky horses which I assume are this years winners (this assumption coming from the life expectancy of any racehorse who can’t race anymore being about as long as ice-cream in Mordor.)

Masses have turned out to watch it. It’s really quite the spectacle. I’m still trying to see if there’s a joke on the go in the country that this whole business is done simply to confuse tourists and backpackers.

A day off from having time off

I'm bored myself of constantly talking about our jobhunt. Lauren has a very promising trial tomorrow at a very high -end ladies fashion shop. It's 3 or so shops down from Boss, for example. So let's all finger's crossed for ... [Continue reading this entry]
