Breakfast is at WHAT time?

So, in some ways Scotland is about good living….I’ll just leave haggis, whiskey, cigarettes and the ‘full cooked breakfast’ out of that generalization. Seriousy though, with all the hiking, biking, climbing and camping, the great outdoors are what call people here.
Still, I’d like to register a complaint…

I’ve been staying in simply little B&Bs with some regularity, as all the hostels I encounter are full. (I really need to book ahead…but I never know where I’ll be.) Included in the price is that full cooked breakfast catastophe…fried egg, bacon, sausage, blood sausage, baked beans, grilled tomato, fried bread…along with toast, cereal, juice, coffee…it’s a bit insane really. Of course, since it’s included in the price I try to get down to the dining room to partake of it…well, some of it.
Now I know with the outdoors beckoning one should get an early start to the day. Okay, fair enough. So when I’m told what time breakfast is I nod and try not to laugh. More often then not that time is 8-9am. One time I was told till 10, because it was Sunday…but I’ve also had places where they serve from 7-8!
I mean, come on…I am on vacation right?
And another thing…the maids keep waking me up. Mind you, I’m getting up at an ungodly vacation hour to have breakfast, and the maids still wake me up! They knock on my door repeatedly…’Are you having breakfast?’, ‘Are you leaving today?’, ‘Do you want your room tidyed?’! Listen lady, you can tidy my room after I get out of the bed…when I’m down having breakfast if you really can’t wait for me to leave. I mean, don’t maids usually start cleaning after checkout time. (Back at home, noon…here 10am, latest). It’s a weird combination of hospitality, motherlyness and straight-up bad manners! I’m in the middle of nowhere (Island of Skye at the moment) trying to enjoy some peace and quiet and the very people I’m paying for refuge are annoying me to no end.
Oh listen to me…complaining.
Well, I do like my sleep, yeah. And most morning I’ve been up by 8…so please leave me be till I’ve had a cup of coffee. 😛
