California Coast (Feb 25-27)

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Stopped in Santa Cruz for lunch and watched some surfers ride an amazingly long wave. There were two seals swimming with the surfers and playing in the waves! Arrived at Big Sur’s Phiffer State Campground. Our site was 20 feet from a river! Happy Birthday Mom!

Woke up and did three hikes. One to a small waterfall in the woods. Second to a view of a forested valley. There was lots of huge redwoods here too. Third to an amazing 50 ft waterfall that dropped off a cliff onto an ocean beach. Saw a huge turkey on the side of the highway… wierd. Stopped to see tons of Elephant Seals sleeping on the beach. They are really funny looking! Highway 1 was very scenic, on top of huge cliffs, and very winedy.

Stopped for the night at a campground just outside of Santa Monica. Again camped next to a river but this time it was full of frogs which croaked very loudly into the night. The car has been overheating in the cities when we slow down so we have been driving with the windows down and the heat on full blast… hahaha!

Great weather in San Francisco. Took a sweet historic cable car ride. We got so see some amazing views of the city on the car but also got to hang off the side and ride up and down those steep hills you see the pictures of SF. We went to the top of Coit Tower for sweet views of the city at night. We also walked up the world’s windiest road and explored downtown.
