Intolerance

I have a strong desire to leave the country—as in emigrate. There is a sour taste of intolerance in the air and with the general election coming up I can’t be sure which of the two big parties are the greater wankers. New Labour is dead, that’s for sure.

The words ‘asylum seeker’ and ‘immigrant’ have become synonymous (genuine ‘refugees’ apparently no longer come to Britain, only economic ones) and they are usually uttered in conjunction with ‘benefits’, ‘jobs’ and even ‘disease’. ‘Terrorism’ crops up frequently in this context as well.

Little Englanders are worried about Gypsies and Travellers that sully their precious landscape to which they, but not the latter, have a birth-right. In some areas it’s driving down house prices. Oh my. I feel almost nostalgic about the Thatcher years.

It’s time to leave the country. Only that means I’ll become an ‘immigrant’ myself. Worrying thought —until I remember that I am one already.
