Off to India ! Thoughts on Delhi Airport

I will be leaving for Delhi this afternoon. So, next update will be from India ! I know Delhi Airport is not considered the sexiest of the airports – plus the crowd of cab wallas jostling with other uncouth road romeo’s is not the most welcome sight. However, I will be recieved by loved ones and taken immediately to a relatives home. Delhi/UP is not one of my most favorite places in India – people on the road are mostly more corrupt, cunning and uncouth than any other place that I have seen in India. Also, UP and MP have most of the dirtiest towns in India. However, this being my trip to India after almost 3 years, my excitement surpasses the travesty of the Delhi airport and Delhi itself. I would rather have landed at Mumbai or Chennai airport.

But like I said, I am excited about my home town Roorkee, and visiting neighboring cities like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Dehradun, Mussorie. Rafting and Elephant ride. Apparently, I will be attending a marrige too in Mussorie – how romantic can it get? Mussorie is considered the jewel of Hill Stations in India, especially in the Garwhal Hills, its the reigning queen. In my lifetime, I have attended only 3 Indian weddings. This sounds promising and different. I will have an update there too.

If my Delhi Airport experience is really bad, my rantings will make itself onto this blog. If its surprisingly better than last time, it will be a surprised blog. But I am open minded – surprise me ๐Ÿ™‚

While there are excellent trains (3.5 hrs) from Delhi to Roorkee, I will be driving back with my parents. Road trip is Very Exciting as I love Indian Dhabbas. And this route is exceptionally good for it. Parathas, smacking dishes…..hmmm. The food can also cause me to be sick but who cares….I will be carrying all meds so I can hold up. I will party like the Romans did ….eat and puke, puke and eat…..I will also be gorging onthe road side coal roasted salt-lemon-peppa slicked Bhuttas !!! Bhuttas for the un-initiated are corn on the cob.

There is ofcourse the famous rest stop / restaurant on the way – Cheetal Grand. It is an oasis in the middle of a “Highway” Desert. I will provide an update on it too. It generally has hilariously rude signs posted in the flowerbeds on its entrance pathway – Three years back, I saw a sign like – “Forks and Spoons are ours, please leave them behind” . This time I will record all the funny signs I see in India ๐Ÿ™‚

Well then, I am off !!

    Hi Gail,

    You are very adventurous ๐Ÿ™‚

I think you have a great deal with your tickets – I guess your flight is to New Delhi..? Be careful while getting out of the airport. Have somebody pick you up and then the best way to get to Rishikesh is take the Train. I can check which train and let you know –

Summer is a bad time to travel but April to May 2 should be pretty decent plus Rishikesh is at a higher altitude – June/July are the more difficult months.

    Take care,
