“You don’t want to go there, they’re all Muslims there, you know!”

…were the immortal words the man at the bus station in Hat Yai said, when I got my ticket for Satun.

A smelly bus ride from Krabi (on the mainland next to Phi Phi), and we got to Hat Yai, not strictly safe as it’s one of the four southern states where the Muslim population are “a bit unhappy” (it’s complicated, though after the military coup, the Straits Times in Malaysia says it’ll all be better!) Fortunately, I’m crossing by sea into Malaysia from the south west of Thailand, which although “full of Muslims” seems to pass the mans approval! Satun was a nice little town, though the hotel was probably the worst I’ve ever stayed in. Next morning it’s off to the port for the boat to Pulau Langkawi island in Malaysia.

We arrived at 8am. 90 minutes later, when everyone else has arrived knowing the correct time for the boat, the speedferry leaves, and winds it’s way through the islands for two hours to the town of Kuani.
