How far?
It’s through unexpectedly long journeys you appreciate the scale on your map! The boat ride is made longer by the engines packing up shortly after leaving port, and then us limping along through a heavy swell for the next three hours. Georgetown is the main town, named after one of the King George’s, as this was a British island at one time (to do with the East India Company). It’s another hilly/jungley/beachy island, with a sprawling and ethnically diverse main town: Malaysia seems much more diverse than Thailand, with a big mix of integrated immigrants from over the years.
Another recommendation was Number 75 guesthouse, with the owner, a smiley Mr Low, and some resident nutcases. They provided some entertainment on the second evening! This is right in Chinatown (which is next to Little India), just off Love Lane, which as you may have guessed was also the red light district! I only spent one full day here- the town itself has a few sights: an old Chinese mansion, a good museum and a dull fort to wander around.
We went to the 60-something floor of the Komtar tower for some views out across the city- and because it was air conditioned. Also after a few months, I had my first curry, and it was pretty good, and some good Chinese food. It seems that most Malay food is influenced by all the Chinese and Muslim Indian population- my excuse anyway!
