Three days in Dubai

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

“I guess this city has its moments,” Wendy said when describing Dubai, and I suppose that sums it up pretty well.

It was quite a bit different from what I had expected. I thought it would be all glitz and glamour, and was pleasantly surprised to find that around the creek area, where we spent most of our time, Dubai is a very real city, unlike Doha, which seems so fake. Throughout the entire UAE, the Emiratis make up about 30 per cent of the population, but around the Dubai creek it seemed more like one per cent – it seemed like there were people from more countries and cultures in Dubai than anywhere else I can remember, led – of course – by the many thousands of expatriate Indians.

So, I take back what I said about Muscat; Dubai would be the more liveable city. There’s plenty of stuff going on and lots of things to do, though I’d rather not have to live in the Gulf at all again anytime soon, insha’allah.

Unfortunately the weather was pretty bad the whole time we were in Dubai, so I hardly took any photos and we didn’t get to go to the Wild Wadi Water Park – a stated goal of mine before we arrived!
