Münich, the beer capital. But for us, the friendly capital.

It was fricken freezing this morning and the cold had left us with a fresh layer of snow as well as half frozen to death in our rooms.

The heaters didn’t work, so it didn’t matter if the power did or not, and I had top get up to put on more clothes. Great look, I couldn’t find my jammy pants so I was in my pink toe socks, my cotton love heart boxers, my tinkerbell nighty and a jumper, sleeping with my travel sheet and blanket over my head tucked in around me and cuddled into my beanie pillow. Don’t laugh.

In a last minute fit I had chucked my closed toe shoes out of my pack cos stuff wouldn’t fit, so am left with flip flops and sandals, so yes I looked a pretty sight in cargoes, sandals and toe socks. I’d rather look like a dork than freeze, plus I can just get away with it as I feign travellor innocence! hehe

The 8am start and the fact that even our bus had no heating, some electrical problem, meanr for a really crappy morning. I slept for half an hour with my pashmina tucked around me, from Lauterbrunnen to our first stop in Lucerne. We found a bakery and hot drinks!

Our next stop was over the border to Leichtenstein, a country of its own. That was lunch and a tourist passport stamp for 2 Swiss francs. When we were crossing the border into Austria we got stopped and Renee our Busabout guide had to take all our passports to the border guards.

They all got stamped cos they were all Aussie passports except for Lija and her British one hehe! Most times the buses just get waved through but sometimes they do spot checks like this or even come on board to take a look. Our driver Ken thought it was cos he was wearing a beanie, but they didn’t even want to see his passport!

Through to Germany the weather was shocking, the traffic was horrendous and we watched this British comedy called ‘Blackballs’, very funny about a young guy who played bowls, also had Vince Vaughn in it.

A quick loo stop when we got off the freeway with a 50eurocent fee. Fun.

It was already late when we got in, but we went for a walk through town and found a place recommended by the hostel map called ‘Lamm’s’, our walking map said real Bavarian food – it was great!

The restaurant was booked out so we are at the bar, oh and it was downstairs but opens into a really big room with a man playing guitar and a man playing accordian (at one stage he was playing the accordian with one hand and the keyboard with the other). The staff spoke little English and the menu was all German so Lija and I partly guessed our meals!

We had a plate with a pork chop, thick cut of bacon, bratwurst piece, saurkraut and weisswurst meat (just a ball of meat – no skin!) all covered in gravy and garnished. Then we shared this plate which had garnish with a cheese kransky each. I swear it was the best cheese kransky I have ever eaten! The flavour just drizzled out, as did the cheese!

A nice old German man came and started talking to us – Elissa had no idea, Lija could understand a bit, and I was (attempting to) converse with him in bits and bobs. He thought it was really funny these three Aussie girls stumbled into the pub and as I told him we just eeny-meany-mo to pick our dinner! He bought us all a round of champagne and I found out he is a regular there – three nights a weeks he goes. He said also tonight with the band and people is a once a month gathering so we were lucky to experience it.

So we all toasted ‘Proste’ and he asked the waitress what is the English for ‘these girls’ because he was waving to her in German saying another round, so she said ‘girlfriends’, so in English he says ‘more champagne for my girlfriends’! Well my German was basic but I asked him things like did he enjoy his food, and what did he eat, and do many tourists come to this place. (His beef was lovely and not many tourists, maybe that was why he was fascinated to interact with us!). So we thanked him immensly and stumbled home a bit giggly.
