In the darkness…
You’ve missed out on a busy week including Lija’s 80s rave, staying with Imogen and more exciting news.
So Lija celebrated her 24th with a highly unorganized evening of antics. We met up with Sarah and Emma who had come up from the south, and forgotten Lija’s notoriety for lateness! she is usually organised but the credit crunch means the usually live city (not the west end but the cbd) was quiet, empty and cold. The bar Lija wanted to go to for dinner was closed so we had to go back to Liverpool St for dinner & then back to the Bank area for Reflex, a very cheesy 80s club with early Kylie, Madonna and Michael blaring through the speakers. The place filled up fast but we took up a fair bit of room on the dance floor of coloured squares.
I flash-danced, saturday night fevered, and even dirty danced a bit (no watermelons included)! The celebrations were followed up last night with dinner and a play – yep, free tickets to see Complicit. A play directed by Kevin Spacey, starring Richard Dreyfuss. It was about an American journalist after 9/11 and his reports that include a tough stance on US torture. The internal struggle of revealing one’s source, ruining any chance of further career & ruining his family. Tough at times, it was a good play to get you thinking.
I also spent a few days with Imo, we went to the Victoria & Albert museum which was really amazing. ItÅ› all about design throughout the ages. We spent most of our time in the rooms about China, Japan and Korea, as well as the cast rooms which are giant replicas of famous statues and tombs. Very cool. That was only about one third of the entire museumÅ› collection so I will definitely be going back again.
My exciting news, as it were, is not completely confirmed yet, but in the processes. I applied for and have been offered a preliminary place on a six-week program in Berlin beginning at the end of July. I would get to live in an apartment with other people on the team, all of us who would be having German language lessons in the morning and working together to produce a guidebook for the city in the afternoons. This means experiencing the activities, food and night life on offer, working together to write it all up and design the final product. It sounds like a fantastic experience, so fingers crossed it all begins to work out.
