Berlin to Prague

Bus day today, we had a 15 minute wait at the border, which our guide said was good – last week she waited for an hour!

Because there were so many travellers Busabout put another service on which meant two buses going to Prague, but only one had to stop and drop people off in Dresden. We were on the straight through bus.

We stopped in Terrazin for an hour and did a tour of the centre. It was a transfer camp for jews and political prisoners during the Nazi occupation, but it also served its purpose back in the 18th century as a barracks against the Germans. People were either held in solitary confinement (like Franz Ferdinand) or made to work, to eventually be sent to one of the extermination camps like Auschwitz.

We had to walk through half a kilometre of tunnels to the other side and I was leading the way with the aim to get out as fast as possible – it was dark and creepy! The guide couldn’t keep up!

When we jumped back on the bus it was only 40 mins to Prague, so we had the afternoon to explore. We took the tram into town and wandered around a bit, finding out that Prague, the city of music, is show-casing a selection of famous works by members of the national orchestra.

We bought some cheap tickets to listen to an orchestra of eight – 3 violins, a trumpet, cello and double bass. The concert was down in the basement of the opera house but it was still a nice room with good accoustics. They played works by Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Mozart and a few other composers.

We did actually go back to the hostel beforehand to change from our travellers clothes to something nicer, it was actually perfect skirt weather, so all three of us were in heels and skirts. Not actually a good idea with cobble stone streets – we kept getting stuck!
