Whale of a Good Time
It’s this time of year that’s whaling season in Cape Town. So since some friends of ours came to visit we decided that we should go see the whales. We first started at our house and then worked our way along the coast looking for them. Unfortunately we saw no whales along the coast but we did see great views of the water. Discouraged that we hadn’t seen whales we stopped for lunch at a seafood restaurant. Italian Ice Cream at the shop followed this.
Just imagine views from the car of mountains with vegetation and waterfalls. Then in front of the mountains and waterfalls there was a city of many houses and skyscrapers. Then in front of the city there is the water. Along the road up and around the mountain there is a risk of falling rocks. So alongside the mountain there are giant iron fences with iron rings attracted to the side of the mountain.
After awhile we came to a stop because of a bunch of people were looking out into the ocean with binoculars. As we drew closer we saw whales. They were sailing which is showing their tail while they are hanging upside down under water. We also saw the whales heads, belly and fins. Still not knowing what kind of whales they were, we walked down a path to the coast where there were rocks that allowed you to get closer to the water. On our way down the path we saw a little creature called a dassie.
Dassies are like big guinea pigs. We didn’t watch it long though because we were there to see one thing, whales. As we drew closer we saw more detail and after the help of a chart we distinguished that they were Southern Right Whales. We only saw the southern Right whales fins, tail, head, and belly but it was well worth the trip, because we finally saw some whales in the wild. The Southern Right Whale is a whale that looks a lot like a humpback whale.
