December 15, 2004mexico city loco
Mexico City...that place is pretty full on, it makes London look tame, there are people everywhere you look or go, on the path, in the road, in cars, on bikes, in doorways and trying to get you to buy this and that.....not surprising though for the size of the place, 20 million all trying to get on and there you are with a big bag trying to find your way....there is an endless market going on in the path and on the road inches away from speeding traffic, wires strung across the road and just at neck height to an old lady with a shopping trolley full of oranges or a kid with a blanket covered with rolls of sellotape, a pickup truck filled with grinning mexicans flies past. Then you get into the subway and there people coming down the carriage in an endless parade of tat....pens, sweets, newspapers, those red dot light things for lectures but highjacked by kids in towerblocks to red dot your chips as you walk home in mile end anyway.....and then there is the smog which you kind of notice when you get there but you get used to or forget in the mayhem but when you actually leave the city you really see....from the bus as you climb into the mountains the city disappears in a yellow fog which lasts for ages....Mexico City rules, but now we are 7 hours away in a much more relaxed city....Ooaxaca and staying at a little place called the magic hostel, couldnt be more different, clean air and mountains at the end of the narrow streets...tomorrow we have a 9 hour bus journey down to the coast....plenty of daytime coach trips so far but we are travelling premium class while we have the cash....long distance anyway, that means no stops and no people getting on and selling peanuts and the same stuff as they were on the subway, thats on the second class buses that stop everywhere....at least you get a whole load of endless straight to video films to keep you entertained and you get a complementary can of pop aswell....viva premier.
