April 11, 2005Day 179: Christchurch
We set off in the bus for the centre after a windy night, though not quite as windy as Wellington. We had a look inside the cathedral, which, though reasonably old for New Zealand (1881), still looked brand spanking new to us. Outside is the Chalice, a modern sculpture created to welcome the new millennium. Or so LP tells us. We changed my last US dollar travellers cheques, appalled at the poor state of the US dollar against the NZ dollar. We decided to help the US franchises to boost their economy and had a muffin at Starbucks. Afterwards, we took a ride on the historic trams and stopped at the Arts Centre, where you can buy arts & crafts from young NZ artists and at the Art Gallery, a huge modern building which nevertheless felt very inviting, and has a great collection of modern art and temporary exhibitions. We had a look at New Regent's St, with its Spanish mission style buildings, and the sights along the way on the tram, as Christchurch is a nice city, clean with lots of space, green retreats and tranquility. Afterwards, I suffered a bad case of getting lost, but in the end we made it for a late lunch to Sticky Fingers, a funky cafe which has unusual dishes on its menu. My pizza had pumpkin and spinach on it and was very nice. Late afternoon we spent with a look at the bookshops and t-shirt shop (one t-shirt had the slogan 'chocolate makes my clothes shrink'). We spent a windy evening at the campsite, reading and having dinner. Comments
