April 04, 2005Day 173: Dunedin cafe culture
In the morning after breakfast, I slipped in my flipflops and was covered in mud... Why do these things happen to me? Well, it could have been worse, as I was carrying a sharp knife... We went into town after doing such boring practical things as laundry and wash mud off my feet and flipflops. Dunedin is quite nice, very laid back, and one of the few places which has a sense of history (albeit brief) about it. I think it's because it has a real town centre (the Octagon) with a cathedral and everything, something that Wellington, for instance, lacks. It is, on the other hand, almost as chilly as the Scottish city which actually has the same root in its name, Edinburgh. We had a drink at Starbucks and indulged in a McD for lunch. We spent some time on the internet, had a look around the bookshop and in the late afternoon we went to see 'The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou', a kind of fake documentary with Bill Murray as some kind of Jean-Jacques Cousteau in a middle age crisis. Back at the campsite, we had sweet and sour chicken and went to bed at about ten. Comments
