March 17, 2005Day 151: Wanganui
Getting up was a bit of an ordeal as I could barely walk. I managed to hobble to the town and we bought some postcards of what we should have seen yesterday and a blueberry muffin to cheer me up. Keiron drove us to Wanganui over winding roads and we were practically the first to arrive at the holiday park. It was a bit windy and we had to hold on tight while setting up our tent, our it would have ended up in the river floating down, never to be seen again. We went to town and had a disappointing lunch (something with scrambled eggs and salmon - sounded good but wasn't) and drove up to Durie Hill. We climbed the War Memorial Tower, which is made entirely out of crushed sea shells and has an excruciating 176 steps, and the viewpoint on top of the old elevator. We took the elevator down and I got back up that way, while Keiron walked. He arrived quicker than me... Back at the campsite we chilled out and got visitors: the neighbouring ducks who came begging for scraps. There were loads of them, and they hobbled from tourist to tourist in the hope of being fed. We had dinner (jacket potatoes and tuna) and had a go on the huge bouncy pillow, which was great fun. Comments
