October 26, 2004Day 17: Not the pretty ones
Today, Sofie, Noémi and I went to the beach. It was a bit crowded so we didnīt get the best spot (next to the rubbish bin) but it didnīt matter. The water was nice and warm, the sun came out and all was well, except for the fact that Sofie keeps talking about meeting chicos, then saying she doesnīt want to be any more than friends (I think the word for it, if youīll pardon my language, is īprickteaseī) A German and his Austrian girlfriend asked to share a cab with us. I said the driver probably wouldnīt do it because heīs only allowed four and thereīs too much police on the motorway and sure enough, he refused. In the evening, I was a bit confused whether I should be flattered or offended. Frank asked why Siguel (sp?) the German speaking Cuban kept talking to Noémi and Sofie, and not the Swiss girls as they speak German too. Frank also brought his friend Bernard, also a bespectacled very dark guy, and we talked about music, such as Erika Baduh (who scored points with Frank), India Arie (who didnīt) and Sade. I think weīre all a bit surprised that we know and like the same music even though we live so far apart. Frank also asked about Keiron and me, and why he hadnīt asked me to marry him, and if we would get married in church if we did etcetera. Iīm not sure if the questions were leading anywhere, or if there was some ulterior motive, because for a Cuban, heīs not very upfront.. We also talked about the situation of migrants in Belgium, they wanted to know what kind and if there were lots of Africans and what their situation was. A tricky subject to answer truthfully. Itīs hard enough to explain to friends and family that you are leaving everything behind and will be travelling for 6 months, 4 of which without your boyfriend, but for a Cuban, both the travelling and the alone bit are simply unimaginable.
