Day 141: Flagstaff Hill

When we woke up, we were both very sore. Keiron's sore throat had progressed to a full blown cold and we took it easy.

We saw the blonde kid we had seen running around naked for a few days break his first heart, as the girl he had been playing with was leaving and he didn't give her as much as a second thought while she was crying. Men! The kid was called Kenobi (as in Obi Wan - bordering on child abuse that is!)

We walked up to Flagstaff Hill, with, obviously, a flagstaff on top. It commemorated the signing of the Waitangi treaty, between the Pakeha (Maori name for European settlers) and Maori tribes. It was cut down up to four times!

But the main reason for coming up here is the view: a 360 degree view of the bay around Russell, with clear blue waters, green little islands and (today at last) a clear blue sky.

In the afternoon Keiron read his book as he was not feeling too good. I went to the beach on Long Beach Road, over a footpath with flowers, bushes and trees and nice views of the bays in front and behind. I had a swim and dried up in the sun, then walked back and had a relaxing evening at the campsite.
