Day 59: Where is everybody?

Well, as lively as Córdoba was on Saturday evening, as dead was it this Sunday morning.

I slep late, feeling a bit guilty about all I was missing but I needn't have worried: the streets were deserted, all the shops were closed. I walked around the historical buildings and took some photos.

Then, at about twelve, it became clear where they had all been: in church, confessing their sins of the night before! I had a peek in the Iglesia de la Compañia de Jésus and the eucharistie (sp?) had just started, the priest was just having his wine, so I quickly snuck back out. About ten minutes later, the streets were teeming with people with kids, all dressed up to the nines.

I visited the Manzana Jesuitica, the Jesuit quarter, as the Jesuits seem to have left quite a lot behind in this region in terms of churches, universities and all that. I was getting a bit hungry, but most places were closed. I was beginning to despair, when I suddenly saw those magically lit up golden arches, and I was saved! Hallalujah, thank the lord for Big Mac and papas fritas... (sorry, all those churches put me in a religious mood).

Córdoba is lovely, a good place to stop over, if not for too long. Lots of homeless people though, and a guy tried to sell me a newspaper from the Universal Church of Jesus, even though I told him my Spanish isn't really that good...

Then I walked to the area of Guemes, which has an artesan fair at weekends but I hadn't read the LP properly and it's only from 4 o'clock so I was way too early... I did have a look around the houses, who all seem to be pink in this area.

I went back to the Feria Artesanal, which was a lot livelier now, and walked back along La Cañada, a stone canal that at present was nearly dry. I had a look in the shopping centre, but Córdoba fashion, like the houses, seems to feature an awful lot of pink.

I had a huge ice cream with white chocolate and almonds, which took me about half an hour to finish off, and then had a look at what was on at the cinema, which is always fun because you need to try and guess the English title from the Spanish translation ('Capitan Sky y el mundo de mañana') but there wasn't much. I also booked my bus to Salta (overnight, 10 hours, hurrah!) and ran back to the hotel as it was pouring down.
