Day 54: Beagle Channel

I didn't get up until eleven, which is the first time on this trip! I walked around town and wrote some more postcards, and I had lunch in Bar de la Ezquina, which has huge sandwiches.

The recurring theme in Argentina seems to be ham and cheese, they don't really do much else.

At two, we wandered to the docks to catch the catamaran, which was more like a ferry in my eyes, to go through the Beagle Channel, which connects the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean. I think it was Fitzroy who first discovered it, and then afterwards they didn't have to round Cape Horn anymore.

The trip was great, it was sunny, and although we were being chased by dark clouds we managed to stay ahead of them until the end. We stopped at a sea lion colony (they really stink) and there were a lot of birds which looked like penguins, but then suddenly some of them flew off, so they couldn't be.

We then saw a cormoran colony (more birds) and finally we went a long stretch to get to the penguin colony. I don't know why penguins are such funny creatures to us humans, perhaps it's because they look so clumsy on land. They're like drunk fat men in suits, waddling around at a cocktail party.

Just after we left, it started raining so we retreated inside. I had a huge piece of apple pie, which was very nice, and a hot chocolate, which wasn't. We played pictionary and made fun of Kirsty's drawings and Nipa's attempt at drawing a monkey.

In the evening we went to Moustacchio's, which was as bad as it sounded: bland food, tartan patterns as wallpaper and a guy with a big moustache. Phil managed to be surrounded by women again, and the conversation turned from moustaches to body hair and waxing...

We went for a drink at the other Irish pub, which was a bit more Irish, had better music and very nice wine in a huge glass.
