Money

Another step has been taken to make sure I am all set to go in a few weeks (22 days to be exact): my travellers' cheques and cash have arrived!

When I tried to order a few travellers' cheques for French Polynesia, the woman at the counter blinked at me:
- CFP (cours franc pacifique), which country is that?
- It's French Polynesia.
- But what does it belong to?
- Ehm, that is what it belongs to. It consists of Tahiti...
Only then her penny dropped:
- Oh, but we don't do those.

We're still receiving the final bills for our flat. Here's my past experience with customer service (I use the term very broadly) in the UK:
1. Ring number
2. Choose out of about 33 options. Whatever you are calling for, your option always comes last.
3. Choose out of 16 sub-options
4. Choose out of 7 sub-sub-options
5. Start again from step 1 as you accidentally pressed
'Am moving home but will be leaving my cat behind'
instead of
'Am moving home but will be leaving my hat behind'
6. Be kept on hold with either tinny Vivaldi concertos or 'your call is important to us, thank you for your patience, we will connect you with an advisor as soon as one stops having their morning coffee / tea / fag break' or similar.
7. When one does become available and you have explained your problem, it will become apparent that in step 2 to 4, you chose the wrong option. Your call will be transferred.
8. More waiting.
9. Another bored advisor will take your problem. They tell you the final bill or similar will be in the post in a few days.
10. Either it does not come or it does come but is incorrect. Repeat steps one to nine until result.
11. Pay bill. In case of credit note, call number.
12. Choose option 45 (or whichever comes last).
13. Type in details and account number. The computer voice informs you the money will be in your account a few days later.
14. It's not.
15. A few days later you get a reminder to pay one of the earlier (wrong) bills or face legal action. Repeat steps 1 to 13 at nauseam.

So, imagine my surprise when we received all our final bills within a few days, correct and all, without any problems. I'm very suspicious and think something will go horribly wrong in the next few days. After all, England just wouldn't be the same if it suddenly starts running like clockwork...
