September 01, 2004Stuff
It's amazing how much stuff a person accumulates over the years. Especially if that person has a literature and DVD-addiction. Keiron and I have started packing, as he will be away next weekend, going for the build-up weekend of his volunteering project in the Peak District. Our flat is stacked with cardboard boxes, and we've got a fair bit still to do. The scary thing is, that of all the boxes, 99% of the things in it are mine. At this rate, by the time I'm 40, I will need a convoy of lorries to move all my stuff. Considering I have moved four times in six years, perhaps it is time to settle down somewhere after this trip. It is either that or downsize, which is a very scary prospect. I just seem to find it physically impossible to throw out books or DVD's, even if I am never going to read or view them again. I used to also keep all sorts of magazines or magazine articles, but moving to the UK has put a stop to that. When I moved here, I moved to a smaller flat than when I lived in Antwerp, a direct result of the ridiculously high cost of living in the UK. Obviously I had to be brutal in throwing things out, as there is a limit to the patience of your loved ones when they have to fit yet another box filled with Lord of the Rings articles into an overloaded van. Something similar happened a while later when Keiron and I moved in together. The flat was about the same size, but I had to make some room for Keiron's stuff as well. The result is, that I have boxes filled with books and video's everywhere, which makes for nice surprises when I have a look inside, as I can't remember half the things I own (I once bought a book twice, not realising I already had it. By the time I reached page 100, it started to dawn upon me that I had read it before...) So now we are storing everything at Keiron's mom and dad's and they have been warned: they may never get rid of my things again! I have this dream that at a point in the future, I will have a nice big house and everything I own will find it's way back to me, to be reunited at last. Comments
Hi Nathalie, I just packed up all my stuff, and I feel your pain! I wanted to write because I'll be in South America this fall too...maybe we'll be in the same place at the same time? Check out my itinerary at http://blogs.bootsnall.com/amy. Also, wanted to tell you I think it's great that you and your boyfriend are splitting up to do your own thing when necessary. Sounds like the perfect way to do it! Posted by: Amy on September 2, 2004 07:22 PM |
