The Red Center

Yeah, we have been lucky enough to dodge the natural disasters thus far, we didn’t even know there had been another earthquake in Indonesia until I read it on a ‘news blurb’ hung up on the campground bulletin board at Ayers Rock!
We did not climb the Rock, the Aboriginal people who are the traditional land owners ask that it not be climbed, but to take a hike around the base instead. That does not stop about 200 people from climbing every day, but I felt that we could climb something else, later. Which we did, we had several excellent hikes around the MacDonnell Range and King’s Canyon. Dave was pretty disappointed not to climb when he saw so many people on top. He felt like ‘would 2 more really matter?’ But we opted to stay down.
I just read Sadie’s ‘That’s Gooch’ essay that Julie e-mailed to me. That was great, and apt. I have found we have been using many Gooch skills on this trip. Just yesterday I superglued my $3 sunglasses back together and we’ve already gone through half a roll of duct tape – it really does do everything. It fixed my camera strap, we taped a cooler shut so we could take it on the airplane, and if you put it over a band-aid the band-aid stays on while you hike! Although your foot gets kind of gross around the tape…

    Hi Dave and Sis,

I’m so glad I got a tip from my mom about your blog. The pictures are fantastic; I hope the technology planets align so that you can post more! I’ll be thinking about you guys at school as I teach the 2nd graders Australian folk dances and songs (“Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, you’ll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me. . .”).
