We are Margit, Mitch, Bjorn and Emma. We left our home in Boise July, 2010 to travel around the world. Bjorn, Emma and Mitch hatched the plan 5 years ago while on a camping trip. Margit quickly signed on and we started planning. We hope to explore 4 continents before we return in June of 2011.
Bjorn and Emma continue their education this year using online resources. Bjorn is an eighth grader and takes several courses online through Idaho Digital Learning Academy. Emma is a 5th grader and follows the Boise schools curriculum using online resources as well as a math workbook carried in her luggage. We all want to learn through travel. Tour guides become “visiting lecturers” and we have regular “field trips” to museums and archeological sites. Most of all, we learn from being in the world, discovering new things every day.
At each destination we enjoy different things. Emma loves all the animals. There are plenty of them wherever we go. She particularly likes the cats of the world but she also loves watching pigeons and sheep. Emma also likes to visit art museums and see public sculptures and works of art in the cities we visit. Bjorn likes hiking and climbing around, exploring archeological sites and visiting museums. Margit is always up for good scenery and tasting the local cuisine. Mitch likes to absorb all the info on the history of an area that he can get. As Bjorn says, “Dad and signs are like a moth to flames.” Except with less dangerous consequences.
We frequently miss home and all our family and friends but we are surprised at how quickly the days pass. We’ll be home before you know it. But first we just need to check out what’s beyond the bend here……
