The Go Away Party

August 19th, 2006

So our “Go Away” party (Claude’s term) started at 5pm on Friday, July 14th and ended at 3pm on Sunday, July 16th. Needless to say, what it lacked in planning, it made up for in spontaneity, and those who attended will attest that a good time was had by all. It reminded me of our wedding, which was the last time we had such an eclectic, diverse group gathered all in one place with Claude and me as the common denominator. Somehow, everyone just seemed to “click” and, by the end of the weekend, it was like everyone had known each other for years. Hopefully, it will attain the status of one of those “Remember when…” events that people talk about for years and eventually become legend. Read the rest of this entry »

Take this job and…

July 2nd, 2006

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to just walk into work one day and announce, “I quit!”?  Haven’t we all?  Well Claude and I actually did it and the results were bittersweet. Read the rest of this entry »

Adventures in Real Estate

May 28th, 2006

One of the most stressful parts of the planning process was deciding what to do with our house and furniture. First came the decision to sell vs rent.

Reasons to Rent:

  • Our house would stay our house and we would have something to come home to;
  • A tenant could pay our mortgage for us while we travel;
  • Real estate prices might go up while we’re away;
  • We would still have the option to stay in Belleville;

Reasons to Sell:

  • We would be free and completely liberated from our worldly possessions;
  • We could use the proceeds from the sale of the house to fund the trip (instead of drawing on our savings);
  • A tenant might trash our house and lower its value;
  • One less thing to worry about while we travel;
  • The real estate bubble could burst while we’re away. Read the rest of this entry »

The Devil is in the Details

May 22nd, 2006

Back in January, when we decided to do this trip, it felt like we had a lifetime to plan it.  The prospect was overwhelming, but we had seven months to prepare, right?  So I’d just like to know who decided to play a really cruel joke on us and put the last four months on fast-forward.  Now, with three months to go, Claude and I are already starting to panic.  It’s one thing to close your eyes, spin the globe and choose your itinerary.  (By the way, I spent two hours trying to create a map of our route last week, only to have it disappear when I posted the #$%$&% thing.  I ended up having to do it in two portions to keep the template from crashing).  It’s a very different thing to plan the nitty gritty details.  For those of you who may be interested in planning a trip of your own, are actually interested in the logistics involved in the planning of our trip, or are trying to cure insomnia, read on.  If not, feel free to skip this post and wait for the excitement of the actual trip.  Unfortunately, unless I start making things up, I won’t be able to thrill you with our adventurous exploits until then.  So, in the meantime, I’ll have to bore you to tears with the details… Read the rest of this entry »

Planes, Trains and Automobiles

April 27th, 2006

So now you know more than you ever wanted to know about our family.  Sorry, once I get started I can’t seem to stop myself.  Feel free to skim over the boring parts – I won’t be insulted.  It’s probably time to start sharing some of the nitty gritty details of our trip so you can get an idea exactly what we’re getting ourselves into. Spreading the Word

April 24th, 2006

So the decision had been made – there was no turning back.  Actually, until we told someone, we could always change our minds without looking too stupid.  Like a couple who’d just found out they were pregnant, we were a little afraid to tell anyone our good news for fear we’d jinx it.  Read the rest of this entry »

The Makings of a Paradigm Shift

April 16th, 2006

It seems like a lifetime has passed since that fateful day in January when Claude said, “What would you think about selling everything and taking the kids on a trip around the world?” You can imagine my initial response – something along the lines of “Are you $@#!% nuts?” The funny thing is, a paradigm shift can happen so quickly, in the blink of an eye, in fact. That’s what happened to me that day.

All about us…

April 16th, 2006

Family PhotoWe are a family four, about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. My husband, Claude, and I have been married for ten years and have a daughter, Alexa (7), and a son, Simon (5). I grew up in Nova Scotia and joined the military right out of high school to pay for my university education. This was a great move as I graduated with my pharmacy degree debt-free. However, I was then obligated to work for the military for five years to complete my contract which didn’t allow me the flexibility to take a gap year to travel like many 20-somethings do.
