The Great Khali Goes Down

Tanzania is a poor country. AIDS has reached epidemic proportions. Only 5% of students finish secondary school. In short, when we were in the United States and we envisioned poverty, this is what we envisioned, not the overwhelming squalor of Delhi or the near infrastructure-less Cambodia, but this dignified and developing country with a long ways to go.

We were delighted to walk into ShopRite, a supermarket that we hadn’t seen the likes of since Australia. Of course, most people still barter for their tomatoes at cheap bustling street markets. Going to the post office, a restaurant, or an airline office is customer-friendly in pleasant surroundings. You sit down, pay your money, and receive service, usually with a smile. The GDP of India and Vietnam far exceed Tanzania, but relaxing over breakfast in our hotel chatting with a Major, we realize Tanzania is aware of its limitations and is on a slow train in the right direction – a vibe we did not get from the former countries. But, as an aside, they’re all obsessed with the WWE.
