A Feast for the Senses

Cow and Chaos Mosque courtyard

First impressions of Delhi/India:

* Dingy, sparse airport
* Persistent and dodgy touts
* Zoo of taxis and more touts outside
* Hazy polluted air, but cool and “sunny”
* Rubble homes, tents, and cooking fires in the Delhi sprawl
* Cows standing on the “highway”
* Men pissing on the curbs
* Indescribable mess of motor bikes, rickshaws, bicycles and cars swarms across lanes
* Down a maze of hidden alleyways into tibetan refugee area
* Nap in peace
* Authentic delicious Indian food
* Haggle with rickshaw drivers
* Rickshaws beat rollercoasters for adrenaline rush
* Cross road on foot safely by faith
* Railway station has more people than many cities
* Special counters for foreigners still convoluted and difficult
* Stumble through traffic to bazaars
* More stalls on one block than Mall of America has stores
* Amazing smells of streetfood, baskets of spices and fresh fruit
* Stench of open air latrines
* Retreat back to the “New Peace House”

This sums up our 1st 7 hours in Delhi. Much like this post, our time was chaotic, overwhelming, and hopelessly unstructured. 24 hours later, Delhi is still the same but we’ve started to cope with and enjoy it. Delhi is a feast for the senses. It’s hard to eat without utensils, but you have to learn to dig in with your hands.
