45 Rupees is $1 US
Today’s expenses:
4 Rupees – cup of yummy chai (tea steeped in milk with lots of sugar)
10 Rupees – bottle of mineral water
25 Rupees – basic Thali (rice, bread, daal, curry, curds) at the cheap place
30 Rupees – an hour of internet access from one of the plentiful internet houses
35 Rupees – roll of toilet paper
60 Rupees – all you can eat good quality Thali
150 Rupees – 3 hours of a rickshaw driver’s time (without haggling)
250 – double room with ensuite (only a little on the skeezy side)
750 Rupees – entrance to the Taj Mahal (for non-Indian residents, 20 for Indian residents)
It’s easy to get into the Rupee mentality and think that the Taj Mahal is the most expensive site to visit on the planet (if not just in India). However, when we’re back home, this will be one of the memories on equal footing with monkeys on the rooftops, delicious Thalis, and sensationally colorful saris.
