Planning my trip proves to be a nightmare! No, not getting from the UK to Portugal, I have exchanged my flight voucher and should be all clear to fly with EasyJet from Gatwick to Faro on the 9th. Accommodation in Faro is also no problem as the camping place is on a local busroute from the airport. From there, it is an easy two weeks trundling through Portugal by local bus or rail. The country is small, services are frequent, I’m flexible. Bliss.

Any idea of further travel was out of the question. Irrespective of the fact that we only had a few days left, I was still feeling decidedly shaky and strange. Once again, I took 10 mg of Seroxat, which made me sweat profusely. But I was determined to put the day to good use. Equipped with two full water bottles, I followed John to the department. The students greeted him enthusiastically despite, or perhaps because, of the two hour turorial he had subjected them to on the previous day when one unfortunate fellow had asked a maths question.

Ten hours of continuous travel brought me back to Kandy. Determined to make my own way back, I took a local bus to Peradeniya and paid the equivalent of a day’s wages for a tuk-tuk to Rob’s house. This was just as well, because there was no sign of Rob. Only John was there to greet me, still in his dressing gown.

Travels on the Edge

As soon as there was sufficient daylight, I packed my stuff, settled the bill (no surcharge for saving lives) and set off towards Kandy. Already in the tuk-tuk to Pottuvil, I knew that things were far from OK. The colours were too bright. I could not look into the distance. I wanted to close my eyes and shut out the world.
