BootsnAll Travel Network

Welcome aboard people

I'm almost back on the road! Hello. This is the blog I (occasionally) wrote during my travels in 2007 and 2008. Now I'm off to India for the summer, working for UNICEF in New Dehi, so I thought I may as well start writing again. I'll try to be more consistent this time...

Cotopaxi National Park

October 27th, 2007

It´s crazy the things you can be talked into doing while sitting in the Secret Garden in Quito. While enjoying a quiet meal with some people, I met some Dutch people there who were telling us about this hostel up near Cotopaxi volcano that has no electricity or any of that high-tech stuff, but it does have scenary and a cheap mid week package. The owners are the same people who own the Secret Garden in Quito and to get the word out about the new place, they were offering a week´s trip there with all meals included, a hike, and a trek to the glacier for $99! News of this spread fast around the table and soon enough we had a gang of 6 ready to head off the following morning to the big volcano.

The Quito Times

October 19th, 2007

I left my two travelling buddies Sharan and Marco on our second day in Quito and headed off across the city, rocking back and forth from the weight of my luggage. First I headed to the Marsical district, the area the Lonely Planet is most often frequented by tourists because of it´s hoard of hostels, restaurants and bars. Annoyingly enough, the book didn´t have a single hostel listed and after walking around for 45 minutes I didn´t come across anything that even smelled like a backpacker´s hostel.

So after a quick juice, I headed off again. This time I decided to try the historic old town and maybe see if the Secret Garden, the award winning hostel I´d heard of, had any space for me. The hotel I´d stayed in the previous night had overcharged us and I was determined not to get ripped off again. So I told the taxi driver to keep moving when they saw me coming and headed for the trolley bus (what any other country would call a tram).
It never occured to me that maybe I was lugging too much stuff for over crowded public transport. At that stage I had my massive backpack on my back, my schoolbag full with books and a laptop on my front and a power converter cradled in my arm which weighed as much as either of the two bags.

The Great Ecuadorian Road Trip

October 12th, 2007

Didn´t want to put this up without photos, but these computers are slowly killing me. I´ll shove some photos in when I get to a better connection (could be months!)

After we finally got across the border into Ecuador we set off on our merry way to Quito, the capital. This was originally going to take us 6 hours or so, but we turned it into a week. Just for fun.

First stop was Cuenca. The place everyone talks about over here and tries really hard to get to, but we didn´t think it was all that great. It had beautiful buildings and a few churches but after we´d seen them we felt like we knew the place well enough and moved on after one night. Only realised there I don´t have a single photo of Cuenca. Oops!

Border Fun

October 7th, 2007

I had great plans to have this entry with photos. But these computers have yet again got the better of me. All the photos I would have used are available here http://clairecanning.smugmug.com/Travel/380032

Four days after arriving in Mancora I was packing up yet again. This time though, I was packing up a 2006 Land Cruiser, which, I can tell you is a lot easier than squashing your life into a rucksack.
My new trevelling buddies were Sharan, a doctor from Malaysia who’s really Indian, and Marco, his 25 year old tourist guide from when he was in Argentina who he decided to invite along for the trip. Marco is a scout and his scouting abilities came in very handy during our time on the road.

Joining us on leaving day was Leo, my ex-room mate from Mancora who is travelling South America on his BMW motorbike.
First stop was Tumbes where Leo had to get a new Ecuadorian visa after a nasty passport robbing incident back at the hostel (before I arrived so I was cleared of anything). But when on holidays one rarely thinks to check what day of the week it is. And the four of us rolled up to the passport office on a Sunday morning expecting to be let in and issued with a new visa on the spot.

Mancóra Take Two

October 1st, 2007

On my second day in Mancora I moved to the cheapest Lonely Planet recommended hostel. Not because I’m a cheap ass, but because I knew there would be lots of backpackers to follow around and try ot make conversation with. And I wasn`t disappointed. Backpackers are generally where the book says they´ll be.

I very nearly didn’t meet them. After check in, I was horrified to find there was a boy in my mixed dorm. I knew it was a mixed one but I still didn’t expect to be sharing with a boy so soon, this was my first night in a dorm, and they take a bit of getting used to (dorms not boys!). Myself and said ‘boy’, Leo, got off to a funny start when he walked in on me chopping up my Lonely Planet. I just didn’t see the point in carrying around pages about countries I’m not going to. Brazil is a lovely place but I didn´t break a sweat learning Spanish just to fly off there.

Mancora: Surfer’s Paradise

September 21st, 2007

DSC03196.JPG Well Piura was such a dull place I don’t even feel like writing about it. So I don’t think I will. My happiest moment there was while looking for a bus a man came over and asked if I would like a space in a ‘collectivo’, a shared taxi. I looked at the rickety bus and the shiny silver taxi and decided to pay the extra €2. I was last in so got the booby seat, in between the driver and the guy sitting next to the driver. After hearing lots of horror stories I explained to the driver how holding onto my laptop bag was way more important than him being able to switch gears. We cruised off for two hours of stomach defining curves in the road. If I couldn’t keep myself upright I had the choice of leaning on the sweaty driver or the sweater passenger man.

And she’s off…

September 21st, 2007

So now the fun is really beginning. Ironically this ‘fun’ started at the bus stop where I was weeping hopelessly with (they call themselves) my Pervian family. Tonight that consisted of Kelly, her mother, two sisters, cousin Denise, her daughter/my Godchild Flavia and Belfastian Aisling. Myself and Flavia did a bit of last minute bonding when I gave her a little pep talk on how she should ignore all the people who tell her her head is massive. I showed her some photos of the square head I had as a child and she seemd to feel a lot better about her large, but circular head. Flavia’s Head

Fairy Godmother

September 16th, 2007

DSC03139.JPG I’m a parent! Sort of. I spent a couple of days in Lima after the mothership left because I promised some kids I’d teach them to swim. I failed miserably at that but I did become a Godmother in the meantime.

Peru in 11 Days

September 15th, 2007

Some people thought it couldn’t be done. And well, maybe some people had a point. My mother came out to celebrate her 50th birthday (hope that wasn’t a secret) and I’m sure on some level to see her tree hugging daughter too.
DSC03155.JPG
The plan was to see Peru in 11 days. And we sort of did. Got to all the major tourist things – Machu Picchu, Lake Titticata, Colca Canyon. I was going to give a day by day account but I’m sure I can squeeze this into one post.

Bye Bye Blog….

September 13th, 2007

…..well possibly. I plugged my laptop into a 110V socket, my laptop is 220 or something. The thing got so hot that when I plugged out the converter I´d got, it burned right into the table! Laptop was out of battery so I can`t check if it has been damaged by the incident. I´m up a mountain chasing volcanoes at the moment. I have to wait until I get to a big town to look for a better converter.

Then I shall hopefully write again.

Bye for now!
