Señor Perito Moreno
Si señor, el glaciar Perito Moreno!!!
One of the biggest and most mind blowing glaciers in the world, the Perito Moreno is located near the small city of El Calafate in Argentina. This 8th natural wonder of the world, has the “small” size of 240 square Km., 6 Km wide and 40 Km long! It´s bigger than Buenos Aires city centerl!! It´s the biggest piece of ice I´ve ever seen, with 65 meter above the water, and it completely blew mi cabeza
I´d like to remind everyone reading this, that it´s winter in the southern hemisphere and getting to the glacier wasn´t easy. The day started with a thick snow storm that made me think that I was not gonna be able to see anything at all. The ice on the road was so thick that we had to use chains to drive on it, a whole new experience for this tropical Colombian 🙂
Finally we made it. We could hardly see the glacier from a 400m distance, so we decided to take a boat. As we were getting closer my smile grew wider and wider. The dark blue color of the ice reflecting on the turquoise water made my heart jump.
After the boat we headed to the catwalks where you get fairly close to the ice and thank God the weather was merciful and the snow stopped, letting a shy sun give us some light and warmth
There it was the glacier in all it´s splendor, with it´s blue color coming from old and very compact ice, that hardly reflects any light. This glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that is not shrinking. It grows 2 meters a day but the by the end of the day it has lost 2 meters again in big chunks of ice that you see falling into the lake below it. Everytime a piece falls the floor seems to shake and the whole valley is filled with the noise of it crashing into the water. It´s absolutely beautiful.
I couldn´t be happier. And although it was really cold there´s always time to be stupid, freeze your bum and play a little, right?
The day finished with a nice and sunny evenning and a big parrillada and wine, what else could you ask for to be happy?
