St. George Island, Florida

Hello, Saint George Island has been one of my favorite spots for long, as I lived just about 1.5 hrs away for 3 years. It is a barrier island tucked away in Panhandle Florida and connected by a beautiful bridge and county roads to the Aplachicola bay [where all the shrimp comes from :)]

I have had different experiences with different people I visited the island with.

With a group of friends, I got to know through the International Center, I bummed on the beach, swam a lot, nice waves, ate /drank, read a book, snoozed and watched some my friends getting their ass kicked in beach volley ball. I took my mom there when she visited me and we had our beers and watched the beautiful sunset, when visiting with my brother, we drove around till 2 past in the night and another time two friends who visited from Boston, and we got there in time to see fireworks light up the sky !

St. George, is a nice quiet island. The commercial beach has some scootie rentals, and some boats. Two restaurants with tikki torches right on the beach. A couple of quiet pubs – some local band and/or snookers. You can rent a bicycle and get around the island. All stores are small houses converted to commercial use. There is a lovely book store, where a hug angry tabby cat sleeps in the window and has green eyes when awake !

A motel with beach front rooms/cottages. Also, homes on stilts – vacation homes on rental though I never rented any of those.

There is a national park on one half of the island, dedicated to preserving the barrier island. DOn’t pluck the sea oats – its a crime with fine and/or jail time. Walkways go over the dunes so as not to disrupt the seaoats, as thats what is holding the island sand together. The is a link to a map in the right side bar, showing the island location.  I will have some pictures here soon.

I was wondering if you knew where i could find information on the beach side house rentals… i saw some houses on stilts that were very nice.

    can you help me?
