Spelunking Good

Leaving the perilously thin earth’s crust and the evil smells behind, it’s time to visit some caves. Waitomo is famous for it’s limestone karst environment, and there are hundreds of underground places to explore here.

Not wishing for a repeat of the near-hypothermia incident when I went canyoning, I opt for a mid-length day down in the Ruakari caves. We’re decked out in the usual wetsuits etc, and some brilliant white “goofy boots”.

Going down

After learning to abseil on a gently sloping grass bang, we drop vertically down a 35m long shaft. Then it’s a combination of zip wires, floating on tubes, climbing and swimming in glow worm filled caves.

Tea break

All too soon it’s over, a fairly easy afternoon, but hey I can feel my fingers and toes this time!
