Jumping out of a perfectly good plane over Taupo

There’s another big lake here, and a touristy town in a picturesque location. But I came here to go skydiving.

Luckily the weather is fantastic and very clear. Three of us get picked up in a stretch limo to be taken out to the airport. They like their gimmicks out here.

The same principle as bungy jumping applies, if you’re going to do it, you might as well go for the big one. We all pick to jump from 15,000ft, and our introduced to the guys who will do all the important stuff, attached to our backs.

In control before takeoff

After a bit of a wait, we get on a tiny plane, crammed in with everyone else and begin the climb to the right height. Some people jump at 12000, and then it’s our turn. Edging to the door, I sit, banana postured as requested and when the green light comes on we drop from the plane. Actually less scary than the bungy jump we freefall at 200km/h for about a minute, and then float down for another 4.

Acrobatics

Once the canopy is open, it’s very peaceful and we can see coast to coast, and to the volcanoes I was up a few days ago. We do some acrobatics and far too quickly we’re coming in to land, bottom first, back at the airport. To coin a local word, “awesome” would be a good way to describe it.

Coming in to land

And it’s all on the DVD to add to the growing collection!
