We win the ‘things to make you vomit’ award!

We forgot to mention the NASTIEST food we saw at the night market in Lauang Probang. Unfortunately we didnt get a photo so we will have to paint the visual for you…. it was a small deep fried animal. We looked and look to figure out what it could be, a ferret or squirrel perhaps?? It was about 15 inches curled in fetal position with its legs tucked up and an enormous head compared to the rest of its body. It was a fried pig fetus!!! You could its little baby snout, skull and feet. GRODDY!!!!! The lady was so matter of fact about it ” yes, pig baby”. We tried to keep it together, but it is the first thing that we have seen that truly made us lose our appetite.

On another note, the coffee in Laos made up for the fact that they eat fetus (where are the pro-lifers when you need them). It was strong and thick and soooo rich it almost tasted like chocolate. We can’t figure out why a country that makes such good coffee only has canned milk!

On another note, we both left our good travel pillows in laos. (boo hoo) How come we still have stupid stuff like the original ziplocks we used and bungee cords but lost such a prized possesion?

On our last note… we left Laos and took the night train back to bangkok. When we arrived here we went straight to take care of our ‘errands’. First, to the vietnam embassy to get our visas.. Success!! Next to the Apple store to once again fix our motherf-in piece of crap i-f’in pod!!! It officially stopped working (again) a few weeks ago. We made the decision to get it fixed (we have about 1 month left in our warranty) and send it home. Easier said than done!! The people at the apple store were about as helpful as a bus driver in India. We just wanted to figure out how to send it to the U.S. to get fixed (we would pay shipping) so that it could be sent to one of you guys when it was done. It seems that it is impossible to get the shipping address from anywhere, unless we call the US help number (with our own calling card). It was the principal of being in the apple store in Bangkok and having them tell us we had to go on the street and call the apple store in the US. Is it not a HUGE global corporation?? Once we got the Thailand regional head service manager involved things started happening, but no one could figure out how to fix it and get it back to us quickly (the guy looked into vietnam, singapore etc.) Long story short… we found a lady from singapore who will take it to the apple support center there, and we will pick it up in a month when we arrive. What a pain in the ass!!!!

On a good note… we think we will take this last week and go back down to Baan Phu Lae, on Koh Lanta. We had such a good time why not spend christmas there!! If we do end up there, there is no phone or email…so Happy Holidays to all of you in advance.. we love (most of) you all!! You can deposit our gifts at “citizens and farmers bank, west point branch” (hehehe)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU BOTH!!!!! AND HAPPY HANUKKAH!

Is 1 million enough for you???? It was deposited at C&F so you can continue your travels for a lifetime!!! Maybe you’ll can become tour guides and escort all of us “poor folks” you left behind.

Your pictures and descriptions continue to be awesome. We probably won’t know you when you arrive back on the mainland. I know many of your experiences are life altering. Lisa, I am happy to see you and Todd hugging and smiling…..a good sign for the prospects of another jewish daughter-in-law!

There is a great article on Ho Chi Minh City in the January issue of Bon Appetit giving eateries, etc. It is rated a top destination.

We will miss you’ll very much during the holidays. Joel, Andy, Adrienne and Karyn are really racking up this year!!!!

Lots of love to you both,

    Mom/Cece

Have a Merry and a Happy!!! Sorry about your fetal pig experience-last one I saw was in high school bio and it was pretty bad then. On another note, thought you’d want to know that Sarah and TJ became engaged today. Very, very excting. Love Nancy

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah…you are missed, but more presents for us!! ha.

I know you said the coffee in Laos was great…look for “weasel coffee” (not sure of the Vietnamese version of that) when you are in Vietnam. Basically, weasels are coffee detectives and they pick only the best beans to injest…then they “expel” the beans, they brew them…and it makes an especially delicious coffee….very chocolate-y (really, its awesome).

Enjoy your holiday together and tell us about some more adventures. Adrienne

HAPPY NEW YEAR! You had me in stiches over your last entry…I’ve never laughed so much at the computer. Steve just came in and I showed him your entry. Of course he said, maybe it’s delicious. Never been to Laos, and may not get there soon, so I’m especially enjoying your descriptions. If you have time, go trekking in the villages north of Ho Chi Minh City. That was pretty spectacular, although you may be trekked out by now. Miss you both. Lots of love, Susie

we had a great christmas, but we missed you both a lot.it is hard to imagine that it has been july since we have seen you both. drew and family came by during christmas.whenever he has a drink or two he tells a few more stories about todd. it was fun to watch him show beth around the house and tell stories. fish has been with us for over three weeks.nellie has cancer and spent three weeks in the hospital.she seems to be doing better, but there will be more treatments.fish is well, but very concerned. his girlfriend came here wednesday. it was good to have fish with us ,but i had to listen to a lot of uva junk.that is all of the news i can think of except pack power is in the bowl game tomorrow against south fla. the basketball taem is 10 and 1, and plays george washington tonight. love you both.

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas my little globetrotting friends! I just got back from NJ where I celebrated Christmas with my crazy and chaotic family. I told the fetal pig story at Christmas brunch–you know I’ll do anything to upset them. They still treat me like a minor celebrity for getting out of the tri-state area, though. I found myself grateful to return to rainy but much warmer and far less crowded Portland. I had to laugh at myself for all the complaining I used to do about not having a real Christmas in Maui. Ahh, the curse of hindsight…
What about a porkroll, egg and cheese on a hardroll hut in Hana??? It would make them forget all about Spam!! Toddie, get in on this before I go public
Happy New Year! I miss you and love you– look forward to seeing you and hearing all your stories in person, as well as collecting all of the trinkets you are undoubtedly collecting for me around the world. I wonder if there is a way to freeze dry the little piggies for rehydration later. I wonder if you could get through airport security with one of those. We could put it on a hardroll!!!!
