Berlin boozing

Another langweilig bus ride with an easy ride all the way through until just before Berlin where we hit traffic. We got up and ready with enough time to chow down on breakfast and get on the bus.

Saskia is our driver and Stuart our guide, his emergency spiel is slightly more funny than the girls, and he said we can’t call him the love child of Larry Emder, Froddo Baggins and Rove McManus, although he describes himself perfectly!

Our stopover was a place called Marienborn, the border crossing between East and West Germany. It’s now a road house/rest stop, but the old buildings and flood lights ahve been preserved so you can see how cars were checked and people questioned. The bus was pretty full again but we sat up the back because Stuart said it was packed – was not being serious at the time and Lija voluntarily put herself next to this guy who turned out to be still stoned from Amsterdam. Luckily he slept most of the way.

We didn’t get in till 7, and were going on the pub crawl at half 8. A quick change and feed in the local restaurant area at a nice Thai place and we were off. It was run by this older lady who wasn’t very nice and didn’t do much except boss everyone around and get drunk in order to shout obscenities about other people. The first place we went to was quite funky as they reused heaps of objects from parted Germany and the fall of the Wall to decorate the pub: the back end of a ute as a couch, and park benches as seating, heaps of old posters and signs.

Between the pubs we were taken to a deserted tunnel and then an old housing site to have shots thrown down our throats. The last place was hip hop dancing and so not my scene, it was five people at a time entry plus pat downs for the boys and bag searches for the girls. We were at the pub for several hours and sobered up enough to make sure our roomate Duck and his mate Nathan, both pissed as parrots, made it back okay. Not our responsibility but seeing as Duck had been unknowingly forking out for rounds that we were quite happy to drink, he was too drunk to notice or care.

So Lija and I danced like morons with the boys to this crap music until they were ready to go home, and Duck propositioned me for a kiss several times, something this drunk slobering 19 year old was not going to get from me, and spent the whole time complaining about it and questioning my judgement. I just gave him a good slap and told him to keep walking.

I also met a lady Katie James, who lived up the street from me at number 22, her mum’s still there, she knows my friend Elise and was Elise’s sister’s bridesmaid at her wedding. It’s a small world! I was talking to her husband Craig, and he’s like, hold on, I need to introduce you to my wife!

I also made friends with a German girl from Cologne, Christine. She was funny, I swear the more I drank, the easier I could understand her thick German accent.

So we trooped in at about half 4 in the morning, way past my bed time!
