Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach 1 Rainbow Beach 2

Rainbow Beach… and our sandman!

Rainbow Beach is a nice little area raised slightly above the sea level, so-named due to the mixed colour of the sands on its lengthy stretch of coastline. The heat increases the more you travel up the East, and as we were now entering the ‘Capricorn Coast’, it was quite intense between 11am and 4pm. The town is quite a quiet spot, and reminds me in a way of Nimbin. We arrived at our campsite late at night after a hefty driving effort by Nicky to get us there – we killed all manner of insects along the way, and our windscreen now looks like a paintball shooting range.

This area is a pretty relaxed place, and we took the opportunity to unwind in a nearby bar on our first night whilst watching a nifty acoustic guitarist play Johnny B. Goode at breakneck speed. Ian and Martin surfed (well, they at tried their best to…) and Nicky and I soaked up sun on our second day, until Ian came up with the tremendously excellent idea of creating our very own Christmas snowman out of sand. It was a complete triumph, the piece de resistance in the shape of some tinsel we pinched from our van and placed fittingly around the snow/sandman’s neck. We couldn’t count the number of Aussies wondering what they hell four stange pommies were doing with a blob of sand, tinsel, and a camera, but we had a hilarious time. How funny we are!

The weather was good but the beach was dark that night, so we illuminated it by lighting a fire and drinking plenty of beer. We spoke to a couple of crazy [pissed as farts] Aussie guys that stopped by in their 4-wheel-drive to see whose fire it was – people were driving their vehicles up and down the beach all night near the shoreline, very common apparently. Rainbow Beach is a really nice location and a place I’d love to revisit given the chance. Christmas is round the corner… can’t wait to see how Santa copes delivering pressies around here in this heat…
