Less-than-productive, yet happy, girl

So – I woke up at 8 this morning, realized I felt like hell and went back to sleep. Till 3pm. uh – whoops. Then again – the girl sleeping next to me in my last hostel was on death’s doorstop (she didn’t leave her bed for over 2 days). Sooo – if I managed to keep some of such sickness at bay by sleeping in, then it was probably a good decision by my not-entirely-conscious brain.

When I finally did get up and get some tea and make it out the door – it was overcast and grey and chilly and you could smell fires and the whole scene was unbelievable gorgeous and wintery. Ah… I went to New Regent street, which turns out to be this adorable street that’s pedestrian only and has lots of cute shops in color-coordinated buildings. And I passed a nifty park I’ll check out over the weekend. Got some nachos as food for the day (surprisingly good guacamole, although still not real). Got a hair straightener (I don’t even want to MENTION how expensive those things are here) but at least my hair will go back to looking cute tomorrow and more importantly, Monday, when I visit the temp agency. Got my hostel sorted out – so I’m there till the 10th. This weekend I’ll buy some business-y type clothes (I found a sale and a second-hand store to check out) and finish up my CV hopefully.

Forgot to mention; finished Pride and Prejudice, and enjoyed it, proving that I am actually related to my mother. 😉 It helped to picture Matthew MacFayden as Darcy. I’m reading Opening Night by Ngaio Marsh at the moment (I looked at the first page of Owls do Cry by Janet Frame and got intimidated. And I need to read some Kiwi stuff. Oh – a reminder – seriously GO READ THE BONE PEOPLE by Keri Hulme. It won the Booker. Kristl and I both agree it’s one of the best things we’ve ever read. GO READ IT!) Anyways – I just got to the murder halfway through the book, which is fine – because Ms. Marsh was a huge theater person, and the whole first half of the book is about being backstage and dress rehearsals and superstitions and stuff. It’s very wonderful.

Cleloinda got to see an early screening of Stardust, and really liked it. Yay! And guess what – it has sword fighting! I LOVE sword fights. I can’t wait (even though I doubt I’ll find the book before the film comes out). Speaking of film release dates; I found a listing of when things are coming out over here. There are a bunch of things I was looking forward to, that don’t look as if they’ll be released at all. *sniff*. Even some things coming to Oz. I’ll keep my fingers crossed on the Assassination of Jesse James.

Fabulous daily show quote; “Hey! Donald Rumsfeld looks great. I’m sure he’s sleeping well.”

Musica: Missing frame, Kill Caustic, Affliction (I LOVE the bridge of this song), Endlessly she said – AFI (yeah, I know. I know. I’ll listen to other stuff soon.)

Speaking of bone people, just bought and read the complete ‘Bone’ which won like 11 Harveys and 10 Eisners. Great graphic novel.

And I’ve read all those Gideon mysteries about bones, and…oh, wait. We’re not trumping on bones, are we? 😉

I’m really glad you enjoyed P&P. Matthew looks OK as Darcy (and solemn-looking Brit would do) but Mr. Darcy would NEVER wear his dressing gown in public!

And Keira Knightley is a stick insect … worse than Gwynneth Paltrow, so they were both WAAAYYYY too skinny for the parts. There must be some good actresses besides Kate Winslet who look more like people and less like they eat their mates (if they eat at all!)

    Who’s Bone by?

And yet she’s at least a good actress and she refuses to get implants.

Emma Thompson was thin in Sense and Sensibility. Frances O’Connor was thin in Mansfield Park. Apparently Kate Beckinsale played Emma at one point, too – and she’s thin as a rail. And I’d be surprised if the lead actress in the latest Persuasion wasn’t thin. The fact is- all leading actresses are thin these days. Even Kate Winslet has lost weight since Sense and Sensibility.

It’s true of any adaptations; look at Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, Bleak House, Dracula. The girl they’ve got playing Marian in Robin Hood is thin. The girl from Virgin Queen was thin (if surprisingly not very pretty). Or look at the Tudors – they’ve got Jonathan Rhys-Meyers playing Henry. He’s far too good looking (not to mention thin) to be true to history. But people aren’t going to pay to see plain people faithfully recreating the look of the era (well except in the Virgin Queen). It’s all part of updating the stories for a modern audience.

Hey – I was looking up BBC stuff – and Jane from Coupling is in their new thing, Jeckyll. Apparently she dated Sam Rockwell at one point, too.

I saw the series premiere of Jeckyll! Oooohhh…scary! And very good, so far. Jane just wanders around trying to seduce her husband, who’s avoiding her b/c feelings of lust turn him into Hyde. Well, and being pouty that he keeps taking off with no explanation.

Being Brits, of course, it’s all much more involved. So far, there’s a cross, and an historical angle, and a literary angle, and a switch-on-a-switch….

Emma Thompson in S&S was normal sized. You don’t have to be fat to be in costume dramas. You just have to have a healthy flesh-to-bone ratio.

Keira Knightley would look sick in any age. She’s just TOO THIN! The gfy girls agree with me, I’m sure. And I already gave her kudos for being normally flat-chested, and for being cranky with Disney for giving her toy doll boobs.
