Cairns show

Got my rainforest trip all booked (23-26th) and I’m going to do the dive when I get back (intro dives don’t go deep enough to worry about flying). 2 more sleeps to Harry Potter!
Got a new camera bag, although the zipper isn’t as good as the last one. New rechargeable batteries and lens cleaner as well. Sheesh. The camera, however, is working beautifully.

Went down to the Cairns Fair today (or show as they call it. BTW – milkshakes here are thickshakes, and corn dogs are Dagwood dogs). It was a bit small – I could have probably gone later, because once I had seen all the exhibitions (animals, art, plants) I didn’t have a lot to do. It didn’t take long for me to splurge a bit and for it to turn into a Wild Animal park-type experience (Oh look – a giraffe! Oh look – Nachos!). Between the strawberries and cream, corn on the cob, and hot cocoa, I may not need to eat tomorrow.

They had lots of outback-type exhibitions; a wood bodger (who called himself the artful bodger – really), a cooper, old model t type restored cars, sheep shearing, a livestock parade, a reptile exhibition, a carcass carving demonstration, chainsaw races (really), the silver spike competition (teams laid 13m of railway track in under 6 minutes – really) and lots of animals. There was the largest cow I’ve ever seen in my life (I think it was 840kg), deer, llama, sheep, goats, birds (including a duck fashion show – I kid you not – they dressed up the ducks in coats and dresses), and the usual petting zoo critters.
One of the highlights was the International masters jumping contest. Pretty horses. Good jumping. The royal navy band did the national anthem and waltzing matilda. There were also a motoX demonstration and a pretty good trapeze act on a crane (twice). And while the trapeze artists set up, we were supposed to be treated to what the program called, “a rock extravaganza” which turned out to be the local middle school reenacting the first 5 songs from Aladdin. Twice.

And the fireworks finale was good. Not spectacular, but it went on for awhile, and they did include some really lovely gold sparkle fountains.

A chain saw race?!?!? Did they turn on the saws, place them on the ground, and bet which would make it to the finish line first?

Or are these people actually stupid enough to run while holding a running chain saw?

Wow. And I thought that dwarf tossing was the stupidest thing they did in Oz.

Cooper? As in, a person who makes barrels?

What’s a wood bodger? And if it’s an animal (non-human) how can it call itself anything? Do you mean that’s what it said on the sign?

Please remember to translate into English, if not into American…

    Love you!

That’s what I thought (the chainsaws) but it ended up being who could chop up a log first. It was still weird.

Yes. A cooper is someone who makes barrels.

A wood bodger is someone who twirls a log on a branch/string contraption to carve bits of it away, kind of like pottery.
