Emmys! (Happy birth moment, Michael)

I’ve officially avoided HP spoilers and after I get off of here, I’m going back to my hostel and reading my 3rd Ngaio Marsh (bad news: I figured out the 2nd one as well) and going to bed to avoid any. I’m considering wearing earplugs to the release party as well. On the bad spoiler side – when I was on the computer in the lounge last night, someone decided to put “LOST; the answers” on and now I know who fathered Sun’s baby, how Locke lost the use of legs, and some stuff about Juliet, despite my attempts to block up my ears and type simultaneously. Grrrr…. stupid 3rd season spoilers.
But on to the important news for which I am risking HP spoilers today: EMMY NOMS!!!
Some bits from EW:

” I’m actually relatively happy at the moment. Perhaps because I don’t watch 24, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, or Friday Night Lights — all of which failed to receive Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nods this morning.” [Ed: OK – up front – I haven’t seen all of Lost’s 3rd season, but the miniseason was good, and I know for a fact that Grey’s Anatomy; the freaking soap, used a bizarre hallucinogenic episode in the spring. How the hell does that get nominated? Have they threatened Emmy voters? Threatened to denounce them as homophobic if they didn’t vote? Grrr…. As one commenter wrote in, “Lost REALLY should be up for drama, and probably win. Greys is one of the most overrated things in TV history with unpleasant characters…well, Sandra Oh is terrific at least and deserves the nomination.” Seriously – how do you nominate something where everyone and their mother HATES the main character? And a lot of the others, as well?]

“PopWatch’s Mike Slezak also notes the absence of love for [Becki] Newton and wonders why there was no recognition for The Office‘s John Krasinski or any nominations at all for the CW, save for a sound editing nod for Smallville.” [Ed: Umm – Jenna Fischer and not John Krasinski? They must be joking.]

“I’m not sure how anyone involved with HBO’s The Wire can resist the urge to go fetal every time the Emmy nominations are announced, as they were this morning. And as, once again, The Wire — TV’s best drama, best ensemble, best…everything was ritualistically ignored. However, amidst some very odd choices, there were some bright spots. Some of the best and worst of the 2007 Emmy picks:

But thanks for…
Recognizing the painful, subtle, funny work of Debra Messing on USA’s Starter Wife; Ricky Gervais’ ripping second season on HBO’s Extras; Neil Patrick Harris’ hilarious, series-making turn on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother; Vanessa Williams’ absolutely perfect diva-ness on ABC’s Ugly Betty; and of course the beautifully underplaying Jenna Fischer on NBC’s The Office.

Ease back a bit on…
The Felicity Huffman nominations. This woman is a hell of an actress, yes. And she lends some serious brains and sense to the daffy world of Desperate Housewives. And she won an Emmy already. This season, you could feel the writers handing her gigantic, weepy, overblown scenes so she could get another nod, and it skewed the entire show. She’s awesome, we get it; back down a little.” [Seriously]
The nominees (who should win – bold, and I’m leaving out supporting actors in a reality competition type categories) and my thoughts (remembering I only saw the first 3rd of this year’s season):

  1. Mariska is the ish says:

christopher meloni is cool, but everyone sweats Mariska.

  2. Karen says:

The David Morse episodes of House were all terrific! He plays a cranky cop who’s out to get House for House’s drug addiction. Why do they never nominate Cuddy from House? I think she’s really good.

Also — The Robber Bride? from Margaret Atwood’s book? I love that book! I didn’t know they made a TV thing out of it.

And — Judy Davis was fab in Starter Wife. I hope she gets it…and also Debra Messing. It was fluff, but really well done fluff. The worst thing was the dopey “good guy” who was a walking cliche. And the actor sucked, too. I was rooting for the other guy, played by Lou Montegna. But a young, ripped body won out. Pity.

WHY NO EDDIE IZZARD? Or what’s her name, who played his wife? Even their kids were good. And FX isn’t showing re-runs, either. Jerks.

  3. admin says:

I don’t know about the Robber Bride.

Minnie Driver was nominated, but Eddie Izzard wasn’t.

  4. admin says:

    Mariska-
Perhaps – but the Emmy voters aren’t supposed to vote based on such things.
