January 16, 2005Crossing Boundries and Getting Lost
It seems like every couple of days I feel differently about my trip to Morocco. When I first bought the ticket I spent about 2 weeks deligantly researching my destination and reading as much as possible. Then eventually I just hit a wall. Can you actually get burnt out on your trip? It seems so... just like work itself, I go through periods of a couple of days where I can't even think about it because it seems so overwhelming. I actually question my ability to handle being alone in a foreign country. This usually lasts a bit and then something kicks in and I remember again why I do this to myself. This is only a 2 week trip and I have this feelings. I can't wait until I plan an around the world trip where I will be gone for an extended period of time. I can only imagine the doubt and anxiety I will feel. One of the things that helps me along when I truely doubt my abilities is to remember when I was younger. I would be able to ride my bicycle a certain distance and my mom would set specific roads as boundries that I could not ride past and I would always go just a little bit further and the rush of being alone in a part of my area that I had never been to by myself was exciting. Again, when I got my driver's license and I was finally able to take off by myself I would find myself driving just for the sake of getting lost. I remember taking my car north on the interstate to Dade County and taking a random exit and then making a few turns into the Florida countryside and trying to find my way back. These are the memories that remind me of why I want to see the world and they really help me cope during the times that I doubt myself. Comments
