May 22, 2005Made it to South America......
"There are many active volcanoes in Ecuador given that the country lies on a destructive plate boundary. Volcanoes are poorly monitored due to lack of resources. Tungurahua volcano directly overlooks the tourist town of Baņos. The alert level for Tungurahua is at orange, indicating that an eruption could occur without warning. Despite the construction of an additional escape route from Baņos, speedy evacuation in the event of an eruption is not guaranteed. Road travel near Baņos is periodically affected by mud and ash flows. We advise travellers not to stay overnight in Baņos." Foreign office website We made it to Ecuador via Bogata airport in Columbia and we are now spending a few days at the idylic mountain town of Banos....pictures of tonights volcano trip will follow tomorrow......
