Okay, so it's May 25th and Adrian and I just left Houston bound for Mexico City. We are pumped, ready to start traveling again. We arrive in the city, catch a taxi to the hostel (it was near impossible to find... but my Spanish has finally become good enough to function... "blue house," "on the left," etc). It's night time and there are no lights on at this house in a neighborhood.
It turns out that someone is there, but there is major remodeling going on so they are not honoring reservations. We were able to sweet-talk our way into staying at a discount, but there was no hot water and the beds were uncomfortable.
We ended up having a few beers with the few guests (long termers) who were staying at the hostel. We had a good time, great conversation.
The next day we went to Frida Kahlo's house. She's a famous artist who had a terrible accident at the age of 18 and her work reflects a life of pain and anguish. She married Diego Rivera. There is a movie about her life.... "Frida" I think it's called. Anyway, it was pretty powerful stuff.
The next day, Adrian got sick. I don't know how... we only had one real Mexican meal.
Anyway, that took some of the steam out of our plans. Having been in Southeast Asia for three and a half months, getting sick again seemed like an extension of all the digestion problems we'd been facing. It was like we went on a vacation to the States, took a break from being sick, and were going back to the no hot water, be really careful what you eat, anti-bacteria the crap out of your hands all the time, dirty sort of life again.
Five days in Mexico City and we didn't do much (that pretty much sums it up). Adrian was sick, I was just hanging out reading.... going down the street picking up some awesome tamales. I honestly could have stayed in the area and traveled.... But getting on a bus to go down to the beach area just seemed like so much trouble. We were tired....... and really in the mood to simply settle down somewhere for a little while.
So... we went to the nearest Internet Cafe and booked a flight to Zurich, Switzerland for the next day. It wasn't even that expensive.
And there you have it.
Three months of traveling Mexico and Central America condensed into five days and only one site.

No problem, I'll go back.
