The Great Scottish Lightshow

On the evening of the England Portugal game we were driving through the lake district back to Scotland. I knew we were home as soon as we drove into the setting sun.

The empty motorway ahead sneaked around a lazy bend and you couldn’t tell where the land ended and the sky began. Smooth grey banks of clouds seemed to shape a heavenly bay surrounding an ocean of liquid gold.

The clouds were boiling, promising changeable weather ahead. To one side, an invisible dragon bellowed gold-tinged smoke across the horizon.

Ahead of us, the sun cast frozen strobes of laser beams across the sky. The rays hit a curtain of rain at the opposite side of the horizon and turned it into a pillar of rainbow colours that seemed to hold up the leaden sky.

In places the clouds separated to reveal blue and pink islands of light. The land lay grey and calm under a candy sky. By the time we entered the outskirts of Glasgow, even the drab imposing towers of the notorious housing estates were bathed in a soft glow.

What a welcome! I hope the pictures’ll turn out so I can share this.
