Publish and be Damned?

Saturday, May 8th, 2004

Is self-publishing really such a bad idea?

Consider the treatment new authors receive from both publishers and agents. Are you really prepared to wait for years before you place your manuscript?

Text embedding

Friday, May 7th, 2004

If anybody is following this blog, you may have noticed bits of text missing from the “extended entry” field. I’m still finding my feet with this which is not so easy with my husband’s LINUX setup and an old version of the Mozilla browser.

Basically, I have problems embedding larger chunks of text (which has let to embarrassment with various web-zine editors in the past: either they get part of an article or I forget to attach it as a file, sigh…)

If there are any enlightened software-gurus out there, maybe you can give me a hint, but basically we need to update our whole system and upgrade the software.

Linux, by the way, is just dandy. If you know what you are doing, there is little you can’t do. If you know…

The race that wasn’t (part 1 of 3)

The Celtic Challenge longboat race is rowed across the Irish Sea from Arklow Ct Wicklow to Aberystwyth in Wales. Like most crazy ventures, it started with a bet over a pint of Guiness and has since been held biennialy as a charity fund-raiser.

Hebrides

Wednesday, May 5th, 2004

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust is a charity monitoring whales and dolphins around the Hebrides in Scotland, educating the public about marine life and conversation in general and cetaceans in particular. Much of the monitoring work is carried out by volunteers, backed by a small staff of education- and project officers.

I was thrilled to secure a volunteer position on a land-based minke whale survey project for four weeks, starting at the end of August. No sooner had I said “yes” to this that an e-mail arrived with a proposal to spend the entire three months survey period as a volunteer project-supervisor!

I said yes, so with luck I will be ensconced in a lighthouse in Ardnamurchan at the western-most point of the British mainland from July to September.

Hi!

Wednesday, May 5th, 2004

So this is blogging… Easy, really.

I have just returned from Ireland where I went to cover the biennial “Celtic Challenge” longboat race from Arkow to Aberystwyth.
At nearly 100 miles, this is the longest open boat rowing race in the world. 360 rowers, support crew and supporters descended on the town and gathered in the sailing club where they were told that the race had to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.
The teams were gutted, but morale improved somewhat after a few jars of Guiness in Arklow’s biggest pub. It is now planned to hold the race next year.

More about this later.

Bio

Wednesday, May 5th, 2004

I am currently based in Stirling, Scotland and travel whenever I can on a mission to watch cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in as many places as possible.

A former zoologist, I hope to earn my keep by writing about it.
