you cannot plan... on anything

You know what I mean...what happens in the end is already past tense.
Yesterday I woke up at 4 AM in Napa,CA, threw the bags in the car and shuffled of to the San Francisco airport if you can call anything at 4 AM followed by a 1 hour and 20 minute drive a shuffle.
8 AM flight to Van Couver, BC, at 1445 which leaves 30 minutes late but I was at the airport 4+ hours early so it didn't matter.
Five hours into the flight the captain says, "You may have noticed we turned the plane around and have decreased our altitude..." to land in Anchorage for repairs...I hadn't noticed. The needed repair was not as bad as thought so it is back to Van Couver with a little less urgency. There was a problem with the windshield. I looked at it on the way out and it was cracked and smashed like a seagull slammed in to it. My life briefly flashed before my eyes, it didn't win an oscar, but I wondered what can a person do if you have a cracked windshield of a 767 at 39,000 feet except wait for whatever happens.
Today I am back in the VC airport waiting for my plane, again. A girl at the pay phone was crying, very emotional,so I grab a few napkins from the condiment stand in the foodcourt and hand them to her. She says thanks and I nod in recognition.
I cannot do anything about a windshield at 39,000 feet but maybe a few napkins helped for the moment.
