New Country........

It's been a while since our last entry so i might miss out some of the more mundane bits like the journey down here to El Salvador, it did involve a speedboat at 7am, 2 chicken buses with 4 to a seat and a packed gangway...these buses remember were designed for 10 year olds to get to school 20 years ago in America...brightly painted, badly driven and poorly maintained they instantly fill up and speed there way down roads they should close and repair but they are so cheap and go absolutely everywhere you cant avaoid them...i love them and i,ve got tons of pictures, anyway we got to Guatemala City and it was pretty crazy, we stayed for an hour and changed buses and headed on towards the border and then the capital of el salvador; San Salvador...it looks like America with all the malls and macdonalds, wendys, burger king and all that but it is definately a scary place on the underside...there are loads of stories and warnings in guide books and you dont want to go out after dark and this mugging and that murder so we were a bit wary anyway...nothing happened mind, a couple of gimme a dollar, hey white boy and loads of stares but then tourists are rare round these parts and people are pretty poor....anyway all of the above led us out of San Salvador after 2 nights, it also seemed pretty expensive especially compared to Guatemala so we headed for the coast which was the reason for our visit anyway, well the main one.....chicken bus down to La Libertad 50c! an hour on the bus and we were back into what we had become used to; streets packed with people, market stalls, dogs, people begging, amputees from the war after some change....La Libertad looks like most of the central American towns weve been in so far but there were no tourists, no expensive resteraunts, internet cafes and all the rest that goes along with it....the town was hit pretty bad by the earthquake a few years ago and still has plenty of trashed buildings and wrecked hotels along the seafront....the heat is amazing, the beach is empty really, black volcanic sand and rocks and El Salvadors best wave....consequently hardened surfers are the only tourists you really see, the local surfers are all young and good....the town is a little like Santa Clara in The Lost Boys but the grim side is not so hidden and you wouldnt want to be out after dark either.......we got another bus a few miles down the coast and found what has turned out to be an oasis....we have a massive room, i mean massive...its like a factory unit or airport hanger...pictures will come eventually....we paid for one night last friday, saturday morning we paid for another five and when they are up we will do the same again....there is nothing to do here, nothing to spend money on, no one around...our room backs onto the family house, they are real friendly especially the grandma who seems to run the show, across the road is our "resteraunt" which doubles as a bus garage for the family chicken bus and repair shop for their fleet of knackered vehicles. Amongst this and the barnyard animals is the kitchen and dining tables....we get what they have that day and there is no menu...she knows we are veggie and cooks accordingly for our three daily visits...according to Mike the surfer who lives over the way they just went to market this morning and got loads of fresh fruit so it could be fresh fruit smoothies for lunch....apart from that its the empty beach and our small library of books and our small selection of cardgames which entertain us at the moment.....
